Is a BubbleBum safe?

Why should I use a Booster Seat?
When children outgrow their forward facing seat (usually around15-18 kgs) they should ride in booster seats in the back seat until the vehicle seat belt fits properly (lap belt should lie across the bony part of the pelvis/hips and the shoulder belt across the chest, never the face or throat). According to CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) data, belt positioning booster seats are more than twice as effective in reducing risk of injury when compared with seat belt alone.
Children should use a booster seat until the vehicle seat belt fits correctly, which is usually when they reach 148cm.
NZ law states that children up until the age of 5 must be in an approved child restraint however current research shows up until the height of 148cm having your child in a booster seat will help avoid serious injury in the event of a traffic collision.
The BubbleBum has been approved under the United Nations ECE Regulation R44/04 for safety for both Groups 2 and 3. It is designed for use with a standard 3 point adult seatbelt that has been approved to ECE Regulation 16 or equivalent.
Someone told me that a backless booster seat is as safe as using just a seatbelt....is this true?
No. A backless booster is designed to spread the forces of a crash over the strongest parts of the child's body using the car seat belt. The seat belt in a car is designed to be used for adults and a child is not a small adult. Their weight is proportioned differently and their internal organs risk serious injury if the seatbelt is incorrectly positioned across the soft abdominal area. They also risk submarining if not securely positioned in the car seat belt. The greatest incidence of abdominal injury is among children 4 to 8 years old. According to researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, for children 4 to 7 years, booster seats reduce injury risk by 59% compared to seat belts alone.
Where is the safest place for my child to sit?
The safest place depends on each car. Frontal airbags should not be used even with a booster seat as they can deploy at a speed of 200mph. Lap belts should not be used with booster seats. The rear seat, centre should be the safest place, but it depends on the type of seat and the car itself.
Booster seats should never be used in a rear facing vehicle seat, side facing vehicle seat or a jump seat.
Can my child ride in the front seat on their BubbleBum?
It is recommended that children remain in the rear seating position until at least the age of 13 years old. A child is twice as likely to be injured in a frontal crash when seated in the front row seating.
Shoulder belt positioning clip
Small children tend to put the shoulder section of the vehicle seat belt under the arm or behind their back; this is VERY Dangerous.
To elimate the possibility of this happening, BubbleBum have included in the V2 product, a shoulder belt positioning clip which holds the belt against the child's shoulder and away from the neck reducing any discomfort the child may feel on their neck. While this is for comfort only, it reduces the potential for misuse of the vehicle seat belt and we recommend that it is used with smaller children who find that the seat belt causes discomfort.
Even though your child will be safer on a BubbleBum than using a vehicle seat belt alone, we recommend that you keep your child in a 5 point harness seat as long as possible.
