The result is the Freestyle, a revolutionarily small but exceedingly powerful hands-free breastpump with Medela’s research-based 2-Phase Expression® technology.
“Creating Freestyle was a totally mum-focused process because we wanted it to be user-friendly and appealing, as well as hand-held and technologically superior,” said Medela manager of industrial design, Jill Solberg. “We know mums juggle so many things, from parenting and working to managing the household and social commitments. So we made Freestyle easy to use as well as ergonomic, so you can hold it and use the buttons one-handed. And it was input from our mum focus groups that inspired us to add features like a structured waist belt, backlit display and built-in timer.”

"How does the hands-free attachment kit work?"
The hands-free kit is an optional accessory that allows mum complete hands-free freedom while pumping. The easy to assemble kit attaches to most nursing bras for a secure and comfortable hold. The hands-free kit includes two sizes of straps that accommodate the majority of mums. The hands-free kit is pre-set to work with MedFela Seamless and Comfort style bras. The kit also includes adapters so that it can work with other types of top flap nursing bras.
“Does a mum always have to pump hands-free?”
No. The hands-free kit was designed as an optional accessory. mum can choose when hands-free pumping is right for her. The hands-free kit and waist belt can be used together, on their own or not at all.
“What kinds of activities should mums do while pumping with Freestyle?”
Every mum is different, with unique needs and pumping preferences. Most mums take advantage of hands-free pumping by reading, checking e-mail, talking on the phone and taking care of their children. While Freestyle is designed for mobility, mums should move with care, especially when bending over, to get the most out of their mobile experience.
“Will the hands-free kit fit mums of all breast sizes?”
The Freestyle hands-free kit was designed to fit the majority of mums up to approximately 40F (18F) bra sizes. The hands-free kits include two hands-free strap sizes and adjustable top straps, so mum can customize her fit.
“What types of nursing bras work with the Freestyle hands-free kit?”
The Freestyle hands-free kit is pre-set to work with Medela Seamless and Comfort Bras. It also includes two sets of adapters that allow it to work with most top flap nursing bras sold.
“What is the waist belt for?”
The waist belt is designed to securely hold the Freestyle pump, giving mum the ability to move around. It is a great option for a mum who wants a complete hands-free experience without having to hold the pump. The waist belt is easy to put on and includes an extender piece.
Comment from Lou at Belly Beyond: I'll be honest, when I first saw the photos of the Freestyle in use - I almost laughed out loud (well it is a rather unexected image). But having worked and pumped myself for over 6 months, I immediately recognised the benefits of hands-free pumping and the freedom it will give mums. The fact that the pump is very quiet is also a great advantage because even in the most progressive of work places, the pumping rooms or space provided aren't always sound-proof!
